Thanksgiving Weekend Sales For The Ethical Shopper

November 25, 2016

Hi eco babes,

It’s that time of year again: marketing overload being pumped into our inboxes and social media feeds by companies promoting their Thanksgiving weekend deals for things that we don’t really need. Consumerism is at an all time high between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that’s why I’m here to offer you some ethical alternatives.

I want to be completely clear on 1 thing: keeping consumption to a minimum is always the #1 best option. I highly discourage buying on impulse – be sure you’re making thoughtful purchases that are 100% necessary. This goes for all year round, but especially on Thanksgiving weekend when so many deals are being thrown our way. It can be like dodging bullets trying to resist temptation to different sales and staying true to our conscious buying habits. Here’s one of my favorite infographics that you can run through next time you’re looking to make a purchase:

And a cute take on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: Ethical Shopping Edition. Reminding us that buying new should be the last resort after exhausting all of the other options first:

Ok so, if you’ve made it this far and have decided that you are still in the market for whatever it is on your list and would like to purchase as thoughtfully as possible, I’ve curated the following list of deals for my readers. I’ll be adding more as the weekend goes on, so check back in, but here are deals from my favorite shops that have been announced thus far:

FASHION – CLOTHING

Reformation // Reformation needs no introduction. Trendy clothing done thoughtfully. All pieces are made from repurposed fabrics and you can see exactly how much water and CO2 the making of each garment saved vs. conventional production. Also, they use all recycled and recyclable packing when they ship out to you – no poly bags. A+, Ref! Forever one of my faves.

Deal // 30% most of the collection. Reduced prices already marked on the website, no code needed!

Time Frame // Now through Monday, Nov 28th.

Bead & Reel // My most favorite vegan fashion shop. I can’t say enough amazing things about Bead & Reel, and when I went on to see what kind of promotion they were offering for Black Friday I saw this message which made me love them even more:

“While we love the holiday season and enjoy shopping for our friends and families, as ethical clothing advocates, we cannot, in good conscience, fully participate in Black Friday without participating in exploitative labor practices regularly used by the fast fashion industry, especially to meet holiday demand. Instead, we are offering a different way to shop with our exclusive Linda Scarf, a beautiful fair trade accessory that gives back to Dressember Foundation, a collaborative charity movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to all women and end slavery. Click Here to shop the beautiful scarf that gives back. Crafted from 100% unbleached vanilla cotton and naturally dyed with charcoal harvested from tree bark.”

Separately, if you do want to purchase some things from their site as well, I have a coupon code “ASHLEY20” that will get you 20% your first purchase.

Indigenous Clothing // My favorite go-to for warm organic cotton winter sweaters. Note: their entire collection is not vegan, so make sure you’re checking the fabric contents. A number of the sweaters are made from alpaca or merino wool, but they also have a really great selection of organic cotton sweaters too. I recently purchased a few for the winter and, you guys, they are SERIOUSLY warm! Vegan sweaters tend to be made out of synthetic fibers like acrylic or poly, so its really nice to find a company making eco-friendly AND vegan options that are fashionable, too! PS: They give back to the communities making their products, read more here.

Deal // Save 25% on the CURATED GIFT SELECTION using code “GoodGift”. Members save an extra 7%.

Time Frame // Now through Sunday, Nov 27th.

Threads 4 Thought // Casual wear and athletic wear, done consciously. Their tag line is #GIVEASHIT – so, it goes without saying that I love them. It’s time we start giving a shit about what we’re wearing!

Deal // 40% off SITEWIDE using code “T4THOLIDAY

Time Frame // Now through Sunday, Nov 27th.

Alternative Apparel // Eco conscious basics and lounge wear.

Deal // 50% off SITEWIDE (*exclusions apply) using code “CYBER50”

One last important note:

While we are spending time with our families this weekend, the people of Standing Rock are defending their land and their water against governmental destruction via the North Dakota Access Pipeline. “In honor of our future generations, we fight this pipeline to protect our water, our sacred places, and all living beings” – Please just take a moment to let that quote sink in. It is incredibly moving for me. This mindset is something to be looked up to in every way. Do you realize how much better the world would be if every being carried this same mindset? Having their actions be driven by the good of future generations? Standing up against governmental corruption? Protecting all living beings even if it means making some sacrifices for themselves?

$3 BILLION dollars will be spent in the USA alone this year on Black Friday. It’s simple: if everyone donated even the smallest fraction of what they will be spending this year, the people of Standing Rock would have a TON of help. PLEASE CLICK HERE TO MAKE A DONATION. If you would rather donate physical items, here is an AMAZON LIST OF NECESSARY SUPPLIES. These people are enduring freezing temperatures right now while having to now deal with governmental force such as rubber bullets, pepper spray, and fire hoses being shot at them.
